The 2013 Student Support Services Scholars Academy/George A. Miller Program Application will be due May 28th, 2013.

The joint application is for both the SSS Program, and the George A. Miller Scholars Program (click on the links for more information on each program).

Please consider the following carefully to determine your eligibility for the Student Support Services (SSS) and Miller Scholars Programs

The SSS program provides academic advisement, courses bearing credit, and academic mentoring for transfer students who are either Low-Income and/or First-Generation.
The Miller Scholars program includes all of the SSS services, and in addition it is a rigorous academic research and/or community service program, with a stipend of $ 7,000 over two years. The Miller Scholars Program is intended for students who are both Low-Income and First-Generation transfer students.

Eligibility Checklist for both the SSS and Miller Scholars Programs

• Are you considered low-income?
• Are you a first generation college student? (The US Department of Education defines first generation college student as a student who, prior to age 18, did not reside with or recieve primary support from, a parent who has received a B.A. degree or its equivalent.)
• Must be either a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States (or otherwise eligible for Federal Financial Aid)

Additional Requirements for Miller Applicants

• You must be transferring to UC Berkeley from a California community college during Fall, 2013.
• During the summer of 2014, you must be available to spend approximately 20 hours per week on your research or community service project and attend a weekly seminar.
• Must be willing to attend a weekly seminar each semester of the 2 year program (Fall, 2013-Spring, 2015)

**How to determine if you are considered low-income:

  1. If you are considered independent on your taxes, you are considered low-income if your taxable income is less than the amount shown on the table below for your family size.
  2. If you are dependent, you are considered low-income if the combined taxable income of you and your parents are less than the amount shown on the table below for your family size.

Note: Taxable Income can be found on line 43 in form 1040; line 27 in 1040A; line 6 in 1040EZ.
